This is mainly a bug fix release for 0.14. It also add support for TNef attachment (winmail.dat) and add some enhancement to calendar.

I've found some interresting doc about mshtml feature, so I was able to fix some long time issue with the message editor in MyOE and add some useful feature.

Upload attachment instead of sending them
Add image miniature in mail, upload original images
Spell Checking support
MyOE now give an approximation of the message size in the status bar.
When you it enter inside a quoted message, you'll be able to add your comment/answer without the quote bar. (in short: it works as expected).
Zip attachment is back!

Proxy support in MyOE

I've added Proxy support in MyOE, now you can add proxies server and chain them. Proxy chaining mean that one proxy will use another proxy to establish the connection... Imagine you have an ssh server running on port 443, and your company allows you to connect to HTTPS website through an HTTP proxy... that's the opportunity to do POP over SSH over HTTP... [of course, read your company policy before doing so...].

Oh, and by the way 0.14 is coming very soon.

And now the question: do you need socks proxy?

RSS reader in MyOE

I've added an RSS reader panel to MyOE. Now you can read your favourite feeds.

What we have now:

Atom, Rss, almost any format
Enclosure downloading
Feed image support
Synchonize all the feed in parallel
Unread items counter appear in SwitchBar (like mail now).

New Server List Dialog & Server Wizard

The wizard for adding server has changed a little bit.

In this scenario everything but your mail address and password are "guessed" by MyOE. It's a little bit easier and faster to configure.

There is also a "Test" button on the server settings, so you can be sure it works before closing the window.

MyOE will also create an identity for your new mail account, this way you'll be able to send mail with your mail address as the from/reply-to field of your mails.

The server list dialog, also changed a little bit, it's easier, more clear.

Hi, first of all, where is MyOE 0.11? It's available for a little while now. Basically it just fix important bugs of 0.10 so it's usable.

What's up for MyOE 0.12?

New Server Configuration wizard: you only have to put your mail address and password, MyOE does the rest (well try to ;). The main idea is that MyOE is trying some common pop/smtp server setting combination, the biggest advantage is that you only have to enter to parameter to get a working myoe.
Mail printing and print preview. You can print the mail you receive or sent.
New To/CC/Bcc fields:
- Detect contact and underline them
- Completion (as before)
- Right click on a contact allow to see contact card or choose send address.
- Image is shown near known contact

Indexed mail now are case insensitive (makes a lot more sense).

MyOE 0.10 is out! The biggest feature of this version is the HTML mail editing, signature and enhanced search. There have been also lot of bug fixes, optimization and little enhancement. Definitly a must have version.

Also it's the first version not marked as "alpha" or "beta", the code start to become stable enough, and we've got enough feature.

In order to provide MyOE 0.10 html e-mail editing, I'm working on the HTML editor component. Currently based on http://www.itwriting.com/htmleditor/index.php

I'm doing some UI work, in order to get it ... usable, and because a screenshot is often better than words, here it is:

The next step will be investigating template mechanism in order to let people send beautiful mail.

I also want an easy "reply inline" feature, with coloring, etc...

Current list of changes:

No more cross thread in splash screen on first run and for progress line
Fix double event entry added in gcalendar while synching
Event synching now use one thread per calendar (a lot faster)
Event categories are thread safe (should be :p)
Big memory improvement: I've fixed an important leak occurring at each mail manipulation (new mail, move mail, filter mail, etc...). MyOE is still quite memory consuming, but it's a lot better now.
HTML mail view now show whitespace correctly. Before "<b>test</b> test" was rendered as "testtest" and not "test test".
Support for SSL for SMTP server: you can now use google smtp!
Signature Handling: The identity option will be back again! You select an identity while writing a mail, it will change the signature, the from, and the reply-to address. The perfect solution to void corporate signature to friend ;)
And the last but not least: HTML mail editing, you can now put some formatting in your mail, include images, etc... There are still lot of work to do, but I've managed to send my first mail with some pictures.
New Attachment List display, allows removing attachment when composing
Last search folder, will show the last complete search done on myoe
Mail from/to this contact, click on a contact and show his last mail
Added reply-to field on message sent, will allow correct reply even with non-relay smtp, or smtp that change the from address.
Message grouping and sorting menu works again as expected (you can sort by subject, from, to, message size, and of course date)

I'll update this post as soon as I get more changes...

I've been quite busy those days (changing job), but the next version of MyOE is coming soon:

Fix the bug with the calendar and google (synch issue, import calendar).

If you want to get a preview, here is how to compile myoe:

Get latest myoe code from Sourceforge (install Tortoise SVN if you don't have any client).
If you don't have any IDE, install Visual C# Express Edition or SharpDevelop (if it's only for a quick test, I recommand the latest, rather good, fast to install and download). They're both free.
Simply open the myoe solution, and press "F5".
If you have any problem, post a comment, I'll fix asap.

I released MyOE 0.8, most of the change are around the calendar. However this build also contains some bug fixes.

Changelog:

- monthly calendar display, today control include new calendar display
- Added GoogleCalendarFeed Dialog
- Sync with Google Calendar

- Enhanced new calendar integration
- Ability to hide/show remote calendar (miss local calendars to the list)
- Add event category edition
- Added the ability to remove events (again)
- Bug fixes: A wrong message id, with some forbidden character like ' crash the synchronization when the mail server is configured as "keep message on server". A replace ' by '' correct this problem. Fix event add. Merge contact now reset selection (now longer edit deleted contact). Other fixes.
- Change calendar display to a new control (better, bigger, faster, more beautiful)
- Change vcalendar import to support gmail WholeDayEvent

Google Calendar inside MyOE!

I've managed to use google calendar API to synchronize google calendars with MyOE, it's based on the pocket pc synchronization code (not very fast), it's not perfect (we still need recurrence for instance), but it's a good start.

All you have to do is to click on the "Add google calendar" button and enter your login password, you'll get a list of your google calendar, and you'll be able to add them to myoe.

And also here is a preview of the new calendar control integrated inside MyOE:

I'm starting to work on the MyOE release, change will include:

bug fixes (it's critical to send me any problem, especially the blocking one)
New calendar display

I'm rewriting from scratch the calendar display control, it's starting to work as expected, it will fix the display of multiday event, be more easy on the eyes and will fix the design flaw related to calendar display (mixing presentation and business layer). I've also greatly enhance the algorythm used to display concurrent event, it's almost perfect now.

And because a picture is worth a thousand words: (all we need to do now is integrate in myoe, match the color, and ... lot of stuff)

MyOE with Contact Picture

I just added to the mail client contacts picture, with that feature, you simply add picture to your contact (like you would do in Windows Live Messenger), and you can see the contact picture in your contact list and mails.

Microsoft published first public beta of .NET 2.0 and VS.NET 2005, even better a "free" version is now available... and it contains lot of exciting stuff...

I'm thinking about moving to .NET 2.0 right now, in order to make MyOE code base better (use of generic, anonymous methods, etc...).

After some beers, on the way home... I had a flash: I decided to use a relational database for MyOE, I thought it would let me add some "cool feature" that you generally won't find in other mail client... but in reality, what feature did I add?

- Category folder, a folder that shows all the mail of this category (and it's a problem, now I want multiple category... will have to think about it).
- Unread items folder, it will contains... guess what, unread mails!
- Spam message: spam aren't moved to the spam folder, they stay in their folder, the big advantage is that if a message was detected as spam but isn't, if you set it as "non spam", it will be sorted in the right folder, you won't have to move it out the spam folder.
- Big message folder: showing all the message with a big attachments, the idea is that it's an easy search criteria (I know Jhon sent me this mail with this document...).

Yesterday, I added another interresting idea: folder containing message from or sent to a given contact, you just have to drag/drop a contact in your folder list it will create a new folder dedicated to this contact, even more interresting, right click on a contact (in the contact list) and choose "View message from this contact...", the current message list will be filled with message from this contact...

In short: database are cool.

But all this stuff lead me to another reflection: what kind of search is interresting, I guess like me, and like lot of other people, you've came across a situation like this: "where is this f**** mail containing this f***** information that I need NOW?". The big question is what kind of search you need to find this f***** mail NOW?

MyOE now support Atom feed, rss1.0 and 2.0 feed and display the news in a new list instead of HTML file...

Other important change in MyOE is archiving support, you can now decide how long message are kept and what to do with them after this time (remove, move to trash, archive, ...). I also removed some important bug in thread management: smoother UI, less deadlock, more confidence in my product ;)

Yup, that's true! I like open source, today I just get a mail with a beautiful ZIP file with outlook express import support for MyOE. Yesterday it was an RSS component made for MyOE. That's the kind of things I won't get with a closed source project...

So this post was just to say thanks to Hervé Poussineau and Weber Wang for their code... and to the rest of the very small MyOE community that becomes a bit less small everyday.

I'm just still troubled by something: I don't get that much feature request, that's strange, at first sight I'd thought I would get lot of request, and only a few actual development. That's almost the opposite. Feel free to post any feature request, to drop your idea and give us feedback!

I made it! MyOE debug build binary, everyday, so you'll be able to see what's up with myoe. The binaries are build everyday at 5am CET.

You need the .NET 1.1 runtime and MDAC version 2.6 or higher. Currently the setup doesn't test the installation of those requirements. (basically if you have myoe 0.5 or older running on your system, you'll be able to run this build).

And euh... yes the build is available from http://myoe.sourceforge.net/daily/MyOEDailyBuild.exe

Feedback about the current build is of course very appreciated!

Spelling in MyOE?

NetSpell seems rather interresting to add into myoe... but myoe need inline "as you type" spelling, not only a spelling dialog.

I'm currently implementing as you type spelling, and I'll even try to include it in the netspell project.

In short: MyOE will get basic spelling very soon.

Yuhuu, I have a working synchronization implementation, for now, I only do weekly recurrence, and recurrence can't be created from the GUI (but can be created from the pocket pc :p)... but it works, I've the perfect copy of my pocket outlook schedule inside myoe, and if I add something in myoe, it's added on the pocket pc.

Source will be commited soon (lot of changes as you guess, no revolution, myoe still works the same way).

I'm working on recurrent event today (well, I'm sick, so it's more something like: I'll try to work on recurrence :/).

I wonder what kind of recurrence is needed? It seems obvious that we need common: every n days/week/month/year stuff, and be able to limit the recurrence to a number of ocurence or an end date... but what else? do you need something else?

Personnaly, I'd like to add the "period" concept: for instance, you'll define a period called "hollydays" and define an event as "every monday except during my hollydays".

The main problem imho, will be syncing it with external device (or other PIM), vCal doesn't contains such things, pocketpc doesn't (and I think palm doesn't), so syncing will implies some kind of lost.

So the question is: is it worth? The fact is that you'll get at least what a pocket oulook PDA can do, is more worthful?

I'm testing Thunderbird... and I'm very happy to discover this mail client... it's slow (I'm syncing my trash account for 3 hours now... only 15.000 mails ;), lot of things that myoe does can't be done with this client (well I guess it does lot of things that myoe doesn't... but hey! you know that my judgement is biased ;).

In short, I thought at first that I would find "a product that maybe one day myoe will reach", it's more "another project in development".

Well... on the other side, I'm not the perfect end user, so please if you use thunderbird, tell me why! If I can borrow some great idea from a project like this one... myoe will just be better.

I took some times for myoe...

I'm currently rewriting the calendar view, in order to show a "true" schedule with hours instead of a "list of events". You're now able to drag your mouse from 2pm to 4pm to create a 2 hour meeting.

PocketPC synchronization will come soon (I rewrote the calendar in order to get my PDA events in myoe), after periodic events will be implemented.

I want to do things like:
- Allow filter to have more than one action (change category to X, move to folder Y and mark as read).
- Implement "database plugin" in order to use something else than access.
- Make archive accessible in some myoe functionnalities (search for instance).
- Move spam informations to a database (text file sux).
- Mail threading for mailing list discussion. (any idea of a suitable algo?)
- Notes, like post it, on ... everything (mail, event, etc...). I need to think about that.
- Welcome wizard to match "user profile".
- Lot of other things.

In the category "stupid fun facts": current myoe code counts 73.217 lines of code and the new plugin interface dll counts 5.367 line of codes). Of course, some code were generated (but not that much).

That's also a quick demonstration of the interrest of the new plugin architecture: someone who want to create a plugin for myoe should need to understand ~5000 loc instead of the +70.000 of myoe... so what are you waiting? code! ;)

Download Mentalis.org Security Library cool! I guess myoe will get SSL support soon! (sourceforge can be a test NNTP server). In fact, the best would be to setup a "socket plugin" component, to allow:
- to externalize socket management
- to add more stuff like proxy, secure connection, ssh tunneling, whatever from outside myoe.

I think something like a dll implementing a ISocket factory (ISocket will be the myoe interface used) could do the job. We'll also need a way to add settings to specific items, like adding stuff to ServerItem configuration, FolderItem, etc... this could REALLY makes plugins more powerfull. For now extending UI is only supported to add configuration page to host configuration dialog.

Plugins are on the way, database will be plugins soon (I want to be able to switch database in some click, to archive data, etc...). Message sorting/filtering rules are being rewritten from scratch to be more flexible, more powerful and faster. Later plugins will be able to integrate themselves in more part of myoe, the idea is still the same: make a rock solid core with tons of plugins around, the core should remains stable in the worst condition.

The whole myoe design switch from many classes to some visible interfaces.

The question is: will it be used by third party one day? will you develop plugins? I've seen lot (really;) of people interrested in myoe, some of them proposed their help, but only a few did... I'm changing myoe design to make the "get into the code" step easier and at least it will make development easier, even for me, but making a plugin architecture if it's not used, does it worth the effort?

But I've a little problem, I wanted to generate documentation from the myoe sources (this should help future plugins developer), but it doesn't work very well, on this machine it takes hour, and end with a beautiful "error code 0"... if anyone with some experience in ndoc/C#XML doc could have a look, it would be very great!

Plugins are on the way! You can now hook events in myoe (new message, new events, etc...) and do what you want from this event!

Soon you'll be able to add custom settings in the preference dialog...

This should make myoe code simpler, easier to understand, easier to debug... and maybe we will even have some motivated people to create some more plugins. For now the small notification windows is done with a plugin, if someone want to enhance it, send me a message, I'll send him a pre-version of the plugin SDK.

I finally added a nightly source snapshoft, it's available from http://myoe.sourceforge.net. It should works out of the box.

If you plan to contribute to myoe, of course you'll have to set up CVS (tortoise is rather good for CVS under windows) but it may help newcomer to get an idea of how the source looks.

Also if anyone with some knowledge in NAnt (or any free tools) could make a NAnt script, this way people could be able to compile myoe for free, for now VS.NET 2003 (or 2002) is needed.

I've implemented the "new threading view" for newsgroup, I'm testing it, and I think it's not so bad... lot of things are still a bit buggy, and it need some polishment, but it will be done for next release.

In fact, I'm thinking about a "daily" (or weekly) build, to avoid large gap between two releases... the problem is to find a place where I could host those files and a script to automate the stuff...

www.myoe.org down... There was a problem with our server... and now the site doesn't work :( I'll have a look asap. The good news is that I get information from the server admin: it should be fixed now (the prob not the website) and I'm now sure we'll be able to switch smoothly from myoe.org to [newdomain name probably sharpdevelop.something].

Funny, I won't develop today... I'll just read information about the new e-mail virus that comes in my mailbox... that's strange but, virus are in a certain point of view, good for us: MyOE isn't affected by those virus, maybe it will make some people try our mail client?

The bad side, is that lot of people are using something else than myoe, so I get something like 250 virussed mail per day! Of course they're detected as spam, so I don't see they exist... but I'm looking for a solution to this problem: avoid to load the whole mail, directly remove it from the server.

www.myoe.org won't be anymore... for now, all myoe activities will be reported on this blog, the previous site is dropped, I didn't like it anyway. I plan to create something simple, functionnal... when I'll have the time, in the meanwhile, this site can do the job.

I guess you prefer that I spent my time in myoe instead of myoe marketing.

Also the name will change, probably for sharpmail, if you have any idea of other suitable name, tell me. For now, myoe will still be "myoe".

Maybe we should have a look to Windows Forms Controls it could restore designer support for mainwindow and composedialog, and let us add new menu/toolbar entry easily.
